Paid tree leads vs your own referral network: the real math

Some paid leads are shared, while a referral may still ask more than one crew. Compare what each lead costs to earn and how many turn into safe, booked work.

A tree-lead seller sketches shared and exclusive lead scenarios with 18% and 70% close rates. Those are hypothetical inputs, and its own arithmetic does not line up cleanly. Do not use them as observed rates. Instead, divide your actual total lead spend by booked jobs for each source, then check gross margin after the crew and truck costs.

Regulators have already looked at this

The FTC's 2023 redress order required HomeAdvisor to pay up to $7.2 million to affected businesses over past lead-marketing claims. Redress returns money to buyers; it is not a fine. The order does not describe every paid-lead product. Check each seller's sharing and credit terms before buying.

A referral can still shop around

A landscaper, property manager, or past customer can send a trusted introduction. That may help, but the homeowner can still call other crews. Referrals also take good work and time to earn. Ask how the lead found you and reply with a clear next step.

Buying the lead was never the hard part

Paying for a lead does not guarantee a reply once you have it. In one Arborists Near Me experiment, Stephen offered a free tree-service lead to six companies running paid ads. Two of the six answered the phone. Stephen wrote, “Even when you try to give something for free you can't, you can't even give something away these days.” That small test shows a missed chance in those six cases, not a trade-wide response rate.

SvarKlar can reply on agreed channels and pass the details to your crew. A referral or repeat customer may still compare other tree services, and a fast reply cannot guarantee a booking.

Is this you?

You are paying per lead for calls that also ring other tree services. You know your best jobs often come from referrals, but you are not sure they get answered any faster than the paid ones. You have caught yourself calling a lead back a day late and losing it anyway. You would rather grow repeat work and referrals while tracking whether those callers choose your crew.

Storms can also bring more requests than one crew can serve; see storm-damage call surge. For tracking your own lead sources, see the local marketing playbook.

A paid lead may be shared, depending on the platform and product. A referral, repeat customer, or neighbor may already know your work, but can still contact other crews. Compare what each source costs to earn and what turns into booked work. SvarKlar replies on the channels set up for your shop.
